Fiano trivia – origins of the name

While our “About Fiano” page gives the basic nitty-gritty about Fiano as a grape and a wine. It’s good to know a little more obscure tidbits and factoids about this special variety.

Did you know that the variety’s name has something to do with bees? Fiano has been grown for millennia in Italy and is believed to be the grape use in the ancient Roman wine Apianum.

The name “Apianum” is derived from the Latin word for bees: “apis”, and this is felt to be the origin of the variety’s name. That bees are strongly attracted to Fiano grapes in Avellino is thought to confirm this etymology of the grape’s name.
